Photographing Northern Lights in: Trondheim – Norway

I have always wanted to shoot photos of northern lights (aurora borealis). Me and a colleague decided to go out at nighttime and see if we could get some good shots of this breathtaking lightshow from our sun. This is my first time doing this kind of photography so I had to do some trial and error. A lot of photos was unusable and I had some focus problems.

At first the activity was pretty low, it was windy and somewhat cloudy. After a while the clouds cleared a bit and we also got a few minutes of visible movement on the sky. Here are one of the better ones.

Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis)

To get even more spectacular images it may be necessary to travel further north in Norway and improve my skill. The family on my dads side live there so that shouldn’t be any problem! :)

Gear-wise I used this:

Nikon D600 with Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8G and Nikon AF-S 28mm f/1.8G
Manfrotto MK293A3-D3Q2 293 Aluminum Tripod

ISO: Between 500 – 800
Shutter: 4 – 30 seconds

Another night when I was out the aurora forecast was unusually high for this place. I wanted to get a shot of Trondheim with the northern lights hanging over the city lights. Because some stupid skies showed up I didn’t get precisely the photo I wanted.
